Wooden Dining Tables for Your Cafe: The BV Budget

December 30, 2007

2899.jpgBefore the winter holidays, I adhered to a gift buying budget. However, I didn’t adhere very well, so now I’m on a tighter budget still. I’m sure a lot of you know how that feels.

But budgets don’t have to be bad things. For example, the BV Budget table is simple and charming. It’s a good choice for restaurant owners who want to replace their cafe dining chairs, but who don’t want to blow their… budget. (I’m going to stop the puns right here, because they could just go on forever, and trust me - neither of us wants that.)

The BV Budget is a plain little wooden table with clean lines that could fit in nicely with any surroundings. The table’s base is made from beechwood. The BV Budget comes in the following sizes: 70×70cm, 80×80cm, 90×90cm, 120×80cm, 140×80cm, 160×80cm. It can also be ordered in diameters of 80, 100, or 120cm. It is 73cm tall.

Plastic Stools for the Outdoors: The GM Tam Tam

December 28, 2007

Sometimes, I just don’t know what a designer was thinking about when they were struck by inspiration to create some of the wackier pieces of furniture I’ve seen. I once found a table that looked like some kind of huge mortar and pestle. And now I’ve found the stools that were designed to accompany it. Behold, the GM Tam Tam Stools:

2833.jpg

They’re not bad, actually. I like them much more than I liked the table. They look a little bit like a Greek symbol straining under the weight of an occupant, but, nonetheless, they have their own charm. And with so many colors to choose from, I don’t imagine there are many decors that wouldn’t be able to handle these stools.

The GM Tam Tam stools are made from weather resistant polyurethane, which makes them perfect for outdoor use as well as indoor. They come in your choice of Fuchsia, Green, Beige, Orange, White, or Metallic Silver. (Although I see a black one lurking in the picture as well.) With so many choices, the GM Tam Tam stools could easily match playfully childish motifs, or modern, sophisticated ones. If you can’t stomach the thought of pairing them up with a table that looks like a slab of plastic rock, feel free to choose one of the smaller, more elegant designs. Bistro owners take note: These stools would make very neat contemporary cafe chairs.

Modern Sofas for Your Hotel: The “Dalilips”

December 22, 2007

salvador_dali_and_oscar_tusquets_dalilips_sofa_kpu.jpgI’m so excited, and it has absolutely nothing to do with the four cups of coffee I’ve had! (Well, that’s mostly true.) I have a deep and abiding fascination with furniture that rides the line of tastefulness, like leopard print chairs shaped like stiletto-heeled shoes. Because of this, I’ve been on the lookout for a sofa shaped like a pair of lips – and Salvador Dali didn’t let me down.

Check out the Salvador Dali and Oscar Tusquets Dalilips Sofa. (Dalilips. It’s just fun to say. Dalilips. Dalilips. Okay, I’ll stop now.) Anyway, this sofa is a reinvention of the famous sofa in the shape of a mouth which Dali and Tusquets created in 1972 for the Mae West room at the Dali Museum in Figueres. This new version was 30 years in the making, and was presented to the world in 2004.

Furniture Design Tips: Make The Most of a Small Space

December 20, 2007

small-room.jpgI will be the first to admit that I am not a big fan of small spaces. When I traveled to New England, I had a bit of culture shock when I saw that everything was built rather vertically; I prefer the sprawling styles of Texas and the southwest United States. But since it could be argued that sprawling villas take up more than their fair share of space, I also recognize the practicality of maximizing smaller rooms when floor space is at a premium.

If your home or business has a space that becomes easily cluttered (or visitors who become claustrophobic), there are some simple steps you can take to make it look like you’ve got more space than you actually have.

Start by coming up with a floor plan for the room. Measure overall room dimensions, and measure furniture pieces so you will be able to determine where they best fit.

Decide where the center of interest or focal point of the room will be. In most cases, your furniture will be grouped around this point. This can be anything from a dining table to a reception desk.

Comfortable Reception Furniture for Your Lobby: The Case Three

December 18, 2007

194_t2.jpgYour lobby or reception area is often the first impression visitors have of your business. You definitely want that impression to be a good one. The importance of customer service and quality goods cannot be overstated, but if the surroundings make guests uncomfortable, they won’t look forward to returning. You want your business to seem like a home away from home, a place of warmth and welcome.

You can start by revamping your reception area. So many reception areas have uncomfortable seating. Too many times, contract hotel seating is chosen for economical, rather than aesthetic, reasons. Believe me, guests want something they can sink into, especially if they have to wait for any length of time. Tell them you care about their comfort and their business by putting the right kind of seats and sofas in your waiting room.

Furniture with Metal Accents: Care and Cleaning Tips

December 16, 2007

Contract bistro chairs come in all shapes, sizes, and materials, each with its own care requirements. Wood and upholstery care are very important, but what about the metal hardware that comes on a lot of furniture? What should a conscientious furniture owner do to properly care for these screws, bolts, nails, and other bits that get dirty and tarnished over time? Should you polish them?

167033_leather_chair.jpgProbably not. In fact, if you polish certain materials, you can do more harm than good. For example, if you polish a piece that you think is made of brass, you can remove the finish and damage the surface if it turns out to be plated bronze or another finished metal. If you’re sure of yourself and still want to polish the hardware, remove it from the piece before you begin. Keep careful track of the small nails and nuts you remove, because you won’t want to find one rather abruptly when you walk across the room in bare feet.

Commercial Sofas for Your Hotel: The Genesis Chaise Lounge

December 14, 2007

402.jpgChristmas is sneaking up fast. It’s funny how we have so many visual reminders – lights, trees, snowmen, commercials on television – and yet we still put off our shopping until the last minute. Have we not learned our lesson yet?

I was browsing some commercial furniture sites when I came upon another visual reminder that Christmas is near: the Genesis Chaise Lounge from Gianni Rossetti. It probably was not actually designed with the winter holidays in mind, but when I saw it, the child in me immediately thought, “Santa’s sleigh!” I mean, can’t you imagine it overflowing with presents and being pulled by reindeer? (If you can’t, that’s okay. I’m imaginative enough for two.)

The Genesis Chaise Lounge is just a really pretty seat. It’s long and elegant. When I force thoughts of Santa out of my head, I can imagine a star from old Hollywood reclining on this seat, wearing elbow-length gloves and calling everyone “dahling”. Of course, this lounge could also be the vivid focal point of a contemporary setting. With some leopard-print pillows and black commercial cafe tables and chairs, it would look downright trendy.

Modern Low Tables: Koivisto and Rune’s “Brasilia”

December 13, 2007

eero_koivisto_and_ola_rune_brasilia_table_0jz.jpgTables look like many things. I’ve seen tables that look like flowers, tables that look like dismembered legs (in tasteful brass), and tables that look like Jenga games gone wild. The Eero Koivisto and Ola Rune Brasilia Table looks like a little wooden wedge that would set off any clean, wooden décor. It’s a cute little table. I just want to stick a paper sail on top and sail it off down a river somewhere, although I’m almost certain that’s not a recommended use for this table.

Made from laminated veneer in birch, oak or walnut, the Brasilia can also be used for multiple applications. It could be a reception area table, perfect for displaying fashionable magazines in a nail salon. Or it could be a snappy little coffee table for a restaurant’s waiting area, with space to store menus and other items beneath the table top. It would look cute as an accent or side table, surrounded by contemporary bar tables in complementary wooden finishes, and it could easily be used in homes for displaying ornamental holiday centerpieces and candles.

Commercial Furniture Maintenance: Get The Smell Out

December 10, 2007

790728_relax.jpgWhen we talk about furniture, we often discuss how it looks, how it feels, and how sturdy it is. But, though many people politely ignore it, there’s an issue that needs to be talked about: smelly furniture. Yes, how your furniture smells can affect how guests perceive your home or business. Nobody wants to sit on a couch that reeks of cigarette smoke and mildew, lest the odors creep into their clothing. If your furniture is a bit on the pungent side, try these quick tips for getting the smell out.

First, you’ll want to kill mold spores, which can be responsible not only for odors, but for allergies and respiratory distress in people who inhale the spores. To get rid of the mold, fill a spray bottle with denaturated alcohol or another anti microbial spray. Open cabinets, remove drawers, and spray all hidden areas where mold can hide.

Next, let the affected furniture dry for about one week. The area should be dry, and sunny if possible. If the smell persists, you might have to seal the odor in by putting a sealant or finish on the wooden parts.

Child Seats for Your Business: The EH High Chair

December 9, 2007

2865.jpgChildren are amazing little critters. Their contortions and escapes would make Houdini jealous. I remember when my daughter was very small; there were no high chairs that could hold her! Luckily, she was very agile for a baby, and so never got herself seriously injured. But really, if they’d had a reality show for baby escape artists, we’d be millionaires by now.

Which brings me to the subject of this post: high chairs. Every hospitality business needs them, because lots of customers bring their kids along when they go out for a night on the town. If you’ve got a hotel, restaurant, or even a beauty salon, you can bet that you’ll someday need a child seat capable of restraining even the most tenacious of escapees.

The EH High Chair pictured here is a real dandy. It’s got joints that have been glued and screwed for double strength; an easy wipe clean finish; mortice and tenon construction for all joints; safety straps; and solid European beech construction. It comes fully assembled, with a minimum order of four high chairs. These seats are stackable for simple storage, and come in a number of colors.
