Furniture Is Not Always Necessary For A New Kitchen Look

January 29, 2008

It is no wonder that in the United States, kitchen remodeling is one of the most popular home improvement projects. The kitchen is the area of the house that is most used by many, as both an informal and formal gathering place, as well as where food preparation takes place. More people are acknowledging the importance of their kitchens by eliminating the walls that traditionally blocked off the kitchen from other rooms; in this way, the cook can visit with people in the family room while eating, and the whole family has access to the kitchen while dining. The problem with remodeling kitchens is that it is the most expensive project in the house to undertake; there are many specialties and facets involved that the layperson just cannot do on his own. The good news, though, is that by watching the budget closely and making some careful choices, adding a new look to your kitchen is within reach of most people. In order to cut some of the costs, consider what exactly needs to be done and what should be left out; for example, not all kitchen projects need to incorporate brand new furniture.

One way to save money on this project is not to replace all of the old cabinets, but instead try refinishing the ones that you have. Your kitchen can take on a brighter look by painting the cabinets both inside and outside in a light color such as with white enamel paint. If you must replace something, try putting on some new handles; these are relatively cheap and will give the space a whole new look.

A second big expense in creating a new look kitchen is in buying appliances. In some cases, you may not have to replace your appliances at all. If you do feel the need to get some new pieces of equipment, though, consider buying second hand. Refurbished or used appliances are not necessarily lower quality, they are just less expensive. Try looking at liquidation stores, garage sales, moving sales, or discount warehouses for functional, beautiful appliances that are also easy on the wallet.

Window treatments in the kitchen are another way to save a pile of money. Try making your own curtains or your own trimming, it will cost a lot less than buying them from the store. Finally, talk to people you know about other ways to cut the costs of home improvement; if your best friend happens to be an electrician, then maybe you can swap some work to help each other out!
